to be a Master Learner should be the goal of ALL educators in the 21st Century

The more I think about it the more I believe that this one idea beats any killer app. If learning were to become the core of our own definitions of ourselves, as teachers, then it would enable all kinds of advancement. -- DFW

He also has some interesting things to say about cognative surplus -- how we spend our excess attention these days. In the 60s and 70s, it was sitcoms. -- DFW

I wish everyone had a computer to use today.

Yes, though not everyone does this. Not everyone can shift task in a way that makes it possible. The value added, I think, is that the conversation of some becomes available to all -- including what we can insert back in. -- DFW

Louise Osland (cn) • 2009-11-06 10:07:20
What a unique experience to be sharing with so many people.

The thing is, that this is not at all unique for many of our students. They share this way every day. They are constantly engaged in this kind of conversation. -- DFW

How do we address the question, "I don't have time to learn this stuff?" as a teacher. I don't even have time to stay on top of my email, let alone Web 2.0 technologies.

It's a common claim and it is true. The lack of time is the great tragedy of education today, that we probably have less time for professional planning than my teachers had in the 50s and 60s. Yet, planning, collaboration, professional development, communication, research... these are all a huge part of being a teacher today.
But to answer the questions, I'd have to say, "Find a way!" It is necessary if you are doing your job as a 21st century teacher. I think that you also have to say to your school and district leadership -- I am spending this many hours a day in professional planning and development, and it is not right nor fair that I am doing it at the expense of my family. -- DFW

CoolAvatar13 (AB) • 2009-11-06 10:10:13
How much time do people spend 'playing' rather than 'doing' or 'learning' with their avatar life or twitter or knitting sweaters...?

This is an excellent question. As I spend very little time in Second Life, I don't know. But I suspect that a lot of times "play" and "learning" are happening at the same time. I think that this is especially the case with many of our students. -- DFW

Louise Osland (cn) • 2009-11-06 10:10:21
How do we get students out of the "rows"!!!!

Hard for me to answer, except that the goal should be to have time facing each other more, and facing us less. Rework assignments so that they are required to share their learning with each other. -- DFW

deHaan (AB) • 2009-11-06 10:10:24

we need to redesign our new schools to accomodate the rowless idea

The UK has demanded that school reinvent themselves. Some new high schools are being designed to resemble malls more than schools. Students have their assignments/projects, and the spend much of the time in coffee house style places collaborating. Not going to be an easy transition, even for students who are accustomed to being taught too, especially those who have learned how to play that game well. -- DFW

Kat (AB) • 2009-11-06 10:11:18

CoolAvatar13 (AB) • 2009-11-06 10:11:48
What is the purpose of learning a little about EVERYTHING, and not focus on excelling at ANYTHING?

Yes! Yes! Yes! But learning a little about everything is important, when it is intended to give all of us a common context or frame of reference. The deep stuff should be more personal, however. I'd love to see students spending more time making themselve experts. If I was still teaching history, at the beginning of the semester I would assign each student to make him- or herself an expert on some person, event, or concept of the course, so that I could call on them at any time to share that perspective. "Sally, how do you think Abraham Lincoln would have responded to the threat of German aggression in Europe?" "Why?" -- DFW

High-speed wireless internet is becoming to be an expectation...

Kids are going to be good at using all this technology... What do they REALLY need to learn? Truly, what happens if servers go down for days, weeks, months?

They'll figure it out. We were without electricity for two weeks when Hurricane Fran came through. We couldn't even leave the neighborhood because of all the downed trees. Had to walk to the grocery stores, where employees walked us around with flash lights. We made do. Humans can do that. -- DFW

I think that we are to teach them to by literate in all that we can, and most importantly we need to teach problem solving. This is essential since we are preparing students for jobs that don't even exist yet!

I think that this is write, though I suspect that we need to stop saying that we need to "teach" problem solving." It's like teaching creativity. If you can teach it, is it creative? We have to help them develop the skills by challenging to accomplish things through resourcefulness. It's easy. "I want y'all to produce a presentation deck that convinces the audience of <this>, but you can only use images. No text." Challenge them to be resourceful by limiting their options. -- DFW

paperless classrooms.....me likey...

A while back a director of technology in Ontario asked how he could improve the use of technology in his district and he comminced to tell me about all of the stuff they had, including a rediculous number of printers. I said, "Throw out all of your printers."
'Actually the thing about paperlessness is interesting. Might we get further if we simply said to every teacher and student, "No more paper." -- DFW''

Kat (AB) • 2009-11-06 10:16:04
I put together a class blog. Took me 5 min. Check out blogger.com. Have students respond to questions, review books, etc. Great site!

Wordpress.com and Edublogs.com are also easy and free -- DFW

CoolAvatar13 (AB) • 2009-11-06 10:16:05
Of course students love technology and yes, so do I. However, at what point does the technology glamour wear off?

Good question -- and I would say that when the glamour wears off is where it starts getting interesting. Actually, the kids don't care about technology -- in my opinion. Alan Kay says that "Technology is anything that was invented after you were born." It's technology to us. It's just stuff to the kids. They don't spend time with their phones because the love their phones. The spend time with mobile phones because it's where their friends are. -- DFW

this technology will wear off, but a new one will pop up fast and replace it, just like everything else

But it isn't about the glamour. Kids don't love blogging because it's cool. They love blogging because it's about communication -- and communication is real. As I said, classmates read each other writings. Teachers measure it. -- DFW

Yet, and I worry about this. But I go to conferences not necessarily to learn new things, though that certainly happens. I got to conferences to learn new language -- to learn new ways to talk about this and new stories. I go to be taught how to sing. -- DFW

CoolAvatar13 (AB) • 2009-11-06 10:20:05
It has to be about the design. It has to be about students discriminately using technology to create and make sound, researched judgement.

Bryan (Ab) • 2009-11-06 10:20:43
Initially I Agee. They may play a lot, but I think we'd see a quick shift to engaged learning.

With access to this sort of backchanneling, many kids would almost certainly abuse it. But that is to be expected. They experiment. But it would soon settle into just something that they do as part of the classroom learning experience. -- DFW

Kat (AB) • 2009-11-06 10:20:46
If the glamour wore off, then you weren't using it to its full potential.

miss (ab) • 2009-11-06 10:20:52
Anyone thinking that funding is an issue?

Yes! But this may be callus, but that's not our problem. Funding is an issue, but there is no choice about retooling classrooms and connecting them to the contemporary information landscape. No choice, unless preparing children for the 1950s is what we want. Funding is our elected officials jobs. They need to figure out a way. That's their jobs, no ours. -- DFW

CoolAvatar13 (AB) • 2009-11-06 10:20:56

The irritating thing I have noticed when marking exams--some students throw in the occasional 'LOL' and webspeak. I tell them it's an instant fail! : )

Why an instant failure. That dosn't make sense. If it's inappropriate, do they now why. Frankly, I think that they have invented a new grammar that is perfect for an avenue of communication that is almost certainly going to be a part of their future. Our job is not to teach them, "Write like this!" "Don't write like this." Our job is to help them learn to communicate and to decise when IM-Speak (my term) is appropriate and when proper English is appropriate. We have to respect their the grammar of the mobile network if we expect them to respect the grammar of the complete idea. -- DFW

If families can afford tech...then why do our newest immigrants seem to have a computer and phones versus furniture in their homes...from my conversations with ELL learners

Grundy (Ab) • 2009-11-06 11:01:16
We can then try to fill in the gaps

Glenda (AB) • 2009-11-06 11:02:07
not all families are wanting to be "plugged in" even if they can afford it

Tabby (AB) • 2009-11-06 11:02:09
Do they only access at school or at home?

deHaan (AB) • 2009-11-06 11:02:26
ELL students families need access to information perhaps more than anyone. Not having it will widen the gap, no?

robbie (AB) • 2009-11-06 11:02:30
battery low. senora/ senorita... hope to meet ya

miss (ab) • 2009-11-06 11:02:33
i have parents who said no to schoolzone

Seρorita (AB) • 2009-11-06 11:02:43

robbie (AB) • 2009-11-06 11:02:44

Grundy (Ab) • 2009-11-06 11:02:51
Most have both... Not all but most. Both home and school

robbie (AB) • 2009-11-06 11:02:55
we can create some energy

Glenda (AB) • 2009-11-06 11:03:17
There are families out there who choose not to have technology including tv

Fern (AB) • 2009-11-06 11:03:46
parents are terrified that their kids know more than them....the way to deal with it...is to limit kids' access to it...therefore you don't look like an idiot as a parent

miss (ab) • 2009-11-06 11:03:52
so how do you reach those kids are they considered illiterate to 21st tech

Lyall (CA) • 2009-11-06 11:03:54
isn't it break time? :)

Grundy (Ab) • 2009-11-06 11:03:55
So because so

miss (ab) • 2009-11-06 11:04:15
interesting point fern

Seρorita (AB) • 2009-11-06 11:04:36
does that mean we need to teach the parents?

Glenda (AB) • 2009-11-06 11:04:39
maybe it is more important that we reach them because they are not getting it at home

Seρorita (AB) • 2009-11-06 11:04:45
technology

Fern (AB) • 2009-11-06 11:04:52

Tabby (AB) • 2009-11-06 11:04:55

stop laughing at me. i have a complex

Grundy (Ab) • 2009-11-06 11:05:32
We tech our students- the change will co

Lyall (CA) • 2009-11-06 11:05:33
well that is the thing, once the parents age, the children will then usaully allow their children to use it as they will see it is needed

BAttlestar gaylactica (Ab) • 2009-11-06 11:05:37
I am scared to think of what kids can access on the Internet when unmonitored. Think about the sites you go to and all you do is click a button that says u are over21

miss (ab) • 2009-11-06 11:05:45
kids already know more than parents technologically speaking

Grundy (Ab) • 2009-11-06 11:05:49
When they are parents.... Look at smoking

robbie (ab) • 2009-11-06 11:06:08
baTTLESTAR YOU ARE NOT THE ONLY ONE

Lyall (CA) • 2009-11-06 11:06:11
there are many good site blocking programs out there

Grundy (Ab) • 2009-11-06 11:06:29
Battlestar, that's why we have to teach them what to do and how to cope

miss (ab) • 2009-11-06 11:06:34
batlestar- thats why we need to teach this to them-you tube can be a good tool not just funny videos

Angela (CA) • 2009-11-06 11:06:51
We are living in the most amazing time in human history.

Lyall (CA) • 2009-11-06 11:07:12
that is also why there are computer forms they sign, they break the rules, they will lose thier chance to work in that way

Grundy (Ab) • 2009-11-06 11:07:17
And to find the"good" stuff you have to look. It doesn't just pop up

adrienne (ab) • 2009-11-06 11:07:37
5v5 west ours... Cal-M

Glenda (AB) • 2009-11-06 11:07:43
its not about blocking, its about learning what is useful and what isn't

Seρorita (AB) • 2009-11-06 11:07:57
that's what i think glenda

Grundy (Ab) • 2009-11-06 11:08:07
I totally agree glenda

miss (ab) • 2009-11-06 11:08:09
i agree with glenda

Lyall (CA) • 2009-11-06 11:08:28
it is you have to teach morals, respect, and be respisible while being on the net

Grundy (Ab) • 2009-11-06 11:09:06
But we're not allowed to teach morals

Grundy (Ab) • 2009-11-06 11:09:29
Theorecticly

BAttlestar gaylactica (Ab) • 2009-11-06 11:09:30
Sometimes once you see something there is no going back. What do you teach kids to prepare them for sites such as disfunction junction. Kids can literally watch murders now

Lyall (CA) • 2009-11-06 11:09:37
well appropriate useage of the interent

miss (ab) • 2009-11-06 11:09:38
devil`s advocate here - who needs morals when there is anonimity

Lyall (CA) • 2009-11-06 11:09:59
that is true miss

robbie (ab) • 2009-11-06 11:10:07
true dat

CoolAvatar13 (AB) • 2009-11-06 11:10:13
I know I'm five minutes late... but just because content is being produced and 'published', doesn't mean it's useful. Lib. / net f of crap.

Grundy (Ab) • 2009-11-06 11:10:21
They watched murders with columbo back in the day...

Grundy (Ab) • 2009-11-06 11:10:35
But I agree, it's more graphing now

robbie (ab) • 2009-11-06 11:10:41
and he smoked an old cigar too

Glenda (AB) • 2009-11-06 11:10:41
its been in books too

CoolAvatar13 (AB) • 2009-11-06 11:10:53
Even students making what we're watching. Whose music did they steal? When do we teach proprietary rights?

Grundy (Ab) • 2009-11-06 11:11:21
But there's no true anonmity... You can be found...

BAttlestar gaylactica (Ab) • 2009-11-06 11:11:24
I stole five albums last night alone

robbie (ab) • 2009-11-06 11:11:30
what about curriculum? just a thought

deHaan (AB) • 2009-11-06 11:11:56
fair use laws around music in ed is different in US - much more liberal

Grundy (Ab) • 2009-11-06 11:12:04
Property rights are chaning though.... And many of these kids are adding value

Lyall (CA) • 2009-11-06 11:12:10
curriculum for?

adrienne (ab) • 2009-11-06 11:12:17
according to canadian law it isnt stealing

CoolAvatar13 (AB) • 2009-11-06 11:12:28

Kat (AB) • 2009-11-06 11:12:58
If you have a change, google 'Dwayne Harapniuk' and 'HHHMMM??? What does this button do? approach to learning'. He's a U of A professor that talks about removing fear from using technology.

deHaan (AB) • 2009-11-06 11:13:48

CoolAvatar13 (AB) • 2009-11-06 11:14:58
There will be a point DeHaan, when there is little incentive to contribute / create without extrinsic rewards.

Miss - - I make sure the kids only post their first names and do not mention school or location (or post photos). The moderators are also required to check the blogs occasionally and watch out for stuff like that.

Lyall (CA) • 2009-11-06 14:21:50
but on blogger.com people have to be accepted to post and I believe read your blogs, so teachers could be the only one with access

Kat (AB) • 2009-11-06 14:21:58

Teachers can integrate technology into their classroom as a separate class, an integrated part of the class, or an add-on. I try to use all three if I can.

Kat (AB) • 2009-11-06 14:31:57
Senorita-Mostly Grade 7's and one 9 class.

Flitta (AB) • 2009-11-06 14:32:43
How do we, as David said, integrate literacy into technology?

Lyall (CA) • 2009-11-06 14:33:25
online books is one way

Flitta (AB) • 2009-11-06 14:34:08
So at the elementary level, we try to teach literacy through project-based learning?

lani (ca) • 2009-11-06 14:34:23
what about just learning how to acess info on a website

Kat (AB) • 2009-11-06 14:35:25
Not only that--there are sites out there that have the story text as well as the audio (storynory.com, for example). Students who aren't great readers can read and listen--then you can have them answer questions on the text.

lani (ca) • 2009-11-06 14:35:31
project based learning can work wonderfully with technology

robbie (AB) • 2009-11-06 14:36:09
can bloggers have anonymity (sp?) such as here? can we monitor inappropriate use ?

robbie (AB) • 2009-11-06 14:36:25
can the few spoil it for the many?

Flitta (AB) • 2009-11-06 14:37:17
Yeah, I think we just have to think about how we can teach literacy skills within the context of using technology...

robbie (AB) • 2009-11-06 14:37:49
kat what are your experiences with blogging with your students? any problems?

robbie (AB) • 2009-11-06 14:38:46
deeeeelicious

Kat (AB) • 2009-11-06 14:40:07
Robbie--I like to nominate student monitors. Never had a problem with blogging with kids.

robbie (AB) • 2009-11-06 14:40:49
and if you did? what would be your course of action?

Kat (AB) • 2009-11-06 14:42:30
If I had a student that was behaving innapropriately, they would lose that opportunity to join the collective discussion that blogging offers. They would go back to a pen-and-paper journal.

Grundy (Ab) • 2009-11-06 14:42:47
I love blogging with students.... I do it all the time, and never had a problem

lani (ca) • 2009-11-06 14:43:00
This sounds like it takes hours and hours what about family, real gardening and even keeping my house clean

Kat (AB) • 2009-11-06 14:43:33
I always make the guidelines very clear, Robbie, when introducing blogging to students.

Grundy (Ab) • 2009-11-06 14:43:55
You can't do it in one day lani.... You starts slow and build it up

Flitta (AB) • 2009-11-06 14:44:01
It doesn't have to take hours -substitute these tools for more traditional paper-pencil-textbook activities

robbie (AB) • 2009-11-06 14:44:06
do you actually blog with students? what is the view of the district on this? didn't they have some advice regarding facebook, etc?

Kat (AB) • 2009-11-06 14:44:12
Lani--I kid you not--just takes minutes!

Grundy (Ab) • 2009-11-06 14:44:18
And get your network to do some of the work for you....

robbie (AB) • 2009-11-06 14:44:40

deHaan (AB) • 2009-11-06 14:45:51

that wikireader looks interesting

robbie (AB) • 2009-11-06 14:46:12

robbie (AB) • 2009-11-06 14:46:31

Grundy (Ab) • 2009-11-06 14:46:33

deHaan (AB) • 2009-11-06 14:46:36

Battlestar (Ab) • 2009-11-06 14:50:00

Battlestar, feel free to stop by highlands one day, I'll gladly help you

Battlestar (Ab) • 2009-11-06 14:53:16
Do you think our district would pay us for our time?

MNC2 (AA) • 2009-11-06 14:53:41
100% agree with Battlestar. Need time to play.

robbie (AB) • 2009-11-06 14:53:59

Kat (AB) • 2009-11-06 15:05:11
Grundy--thanks, I will check it out Audacity! Any issues with it?

Kat (AB) • 2009-11-06 15:05:26
Darn. : )

Flitta (AB) • 2009-11-06 15:05:43
You can sign up for a free 30 day trial. There is a Pixton for Schools link on bottom right corner. I used pixton to make French conversation comics in grade 4.

Kat (AB) • 2009-11-06 15:07:08
Will check out Pixton too!

William (AB) • 2009-11-06 15:07:11
I'm totally engaged thinking about possibilities

miss (ab) • 2009-11-06 15:07:29
is this part the edge of our seat

William (AB) • 2009-11-06 15:07:34
if our brains aren't being stretched and challenged, we're not learning

Battlestar (Ab) • 2009-11-06 15:08:08
He is showing us some possbilities.

miss (ab) • 2009-11-06 15:09:27
possibility yes but overwhelming and not practical without skills and timeto learn

lani (ca) • 2009-11-06 15:09:57
what is this website david is using now?

Lyall (CA) • 2009-11-06 15:10:24
I think it is still the prezi site

Flitta (AB) • 2009-11-06 15:10:44
I would love to just get a list of these websites with a description of each and suggestions for how to use in the classroom

miss (ab) • 2009-11-06 15:10:53
ie always thought of teachers as learners nothing new

Battlestar (Ab) • 2009-11-06 15:10:58
Missy quit being pissy ;)

lani (ca) • 2009-11-06 15:11:00

MNC2 (AA) • 2009-11-06 15:13:19
Here's the crunch - students need complete access soft

Kat (AB) • 2009-11-06 15:14:28
Just checked out prezi website. Around $245 Canadian for an entire year. There's a 2 day free trial.

eagle1 (ab) • 2009-11-06 15:15:42

Lyall (CA) • 2009-11-06 15:16:29

eagle1 (ab) • 2009-11-06 15:16:51
great phrase "he has no ceiling"

deHaan (AB) • 2009-11-06 15:17:23
how often do we think of our students that way? (no ceiling)

MNC2 (AA) • 2009-11-06 15:17:24
Write script with rationale - set up

William (AB) • 2009-11-06 15:18:08
I think he means that the walls of the classroom have been broken down. We're not limited to the traditional tools and text.

lani (ca) • 2009-11-06 15:19:01
profound william

William (AB) • 2009-11-06 15:19:42
I'm thinking that a couple of shifts in how I'm teaching would open up a lot of possibilities and engage a lot more students.

Battlestar (Ab) • 2009-11-06 15:19:47
If you believe there aren't ceilings you are a product of social hegemony. Sorry to be pessimistic on that point.

Flitta (AB) • 2009-11-06 15:20:26
Yeah, it

MNC2 (AA) • 2009-11-06 15:20:34
Time to develop scripts with curricular rationale - set up video (props) - tape and edit with available software and hardware = miracle.

Flitta (AB) • 2009-11-06 15:21:05
oops, it's all about motivating students to wonder, to seek, to create, and share

William (AB) • 2009-11-06 15:23:01
totally. and providing them with some engaging tools to do this.

lani (ca) • 2009-11-06 15:23:49
will our school boards support us?

Flitta (AB) • 2009-11-06 15:25:11

lani (ca) • 2009-11-06 15:26:46
how many teachers are on board with this?

Kat (AB) • 2009-11-06 15:27:05
From my old instructor at the university--He never understood why students kept coming up to him and asking "How did I lose marks on this?" He responded, "Why do you think you start at 100% and lose marks? You all start at 0% and work your way up." Don't ever assume!

deHaan (AB) • 2009-11-06 15:27:20
whoa...collective consciousness visually represented!

Battlestar (Ab) • 2009-11-06 15:27:44
The district is relying on us to do the work.

Lyall (CA) • 2009-11-06 15:28:25
but not providing more time...

lani (ca) • 2009-11-06 15:28:38
do we have the funding and class sizes condusive to this?

Battlestar (Ab) • 2009-11-06 15:28:44
Time is money

Lyall (CA) • 2009-11-06 15:29:36
