Backchannel Transcript

The following is a transcript of the conversations engaged in by both groups of education leaders from the school district, in conversations about contemporary schooling.

I think people are getting frustrated

I agree with John, that it is fantastic that we have come to assume access to the network with our laptops, netbooks, and even our pocket phones. It's all the more reason that it should be there. I know that John and Doug were talking about setting up one of the local high schools so that they could hold this sort of event there -- where they can predict and control access to the network for participants.
I can remember blogging about how we need to consider the network as a school infrastructure that is no less critical to schooling than electricity, heat, water, etc. I think we've gotten there, as far as the consideration is concerned. Yet too many teacher ans student learnerns still can rely on that infrastructure. -- DFW

Children need to problem solve "problems" they have never experienced before.

I asked one group whether we could teach problem-solving. One person said yes, and I agree. However, I think that it is also a skill that you develop. It's like "creativity." If you can teach creativity, doesn't it stop being creativity? -- DFW

Tis true. But this isn't really meant to be communication in the face-to-face sense. It is a sharing of ideas and experiences. Stephen Heppel has a great phrase for it which I can't think of right now. It's somewhere between real-time and recorded... He says it's a great place to learn. -- David W

And I preferred to watch television. Just because they like to play video games doesn't mean that they aren't learning to communicate face-to-face. In fact, a huge part of playing video games is the conversations that they have with each other about the games -- deep conversations. Some of it is online through the game. parkview (on) • 2009-11-10 08:38:39
The "problem" with books, is that their information is outdated the day they are published. Especially any facts or figures

I think that another question is, "How comfortable was I, speaking to a group, when so many of you had your heads down to your laptops?"
To be honest, it's taking me some time to adjust to. When I go back and read the transcript, I am pleased with the conversation. However, I expect to see the eyes of my listeners -- and I think that we have to have conversations with our students about how the can backchannel and respect the speaker/teacher at the same time. We've got to work this out, and we need to invite the students to help. -- David W

It's not just technical knowledge. It's practice. They know the experience of hyperconnectedness and we need to help them, help us figure out how to channel curriculum through that experience -- through those tenticles... -- David W

Dean (QE) • 2009-11-10 08:51:58
"we" can't teach what we don't know and understand- as teachers we have to take on the challenge of learning the technology

OK! It's not about the technology. What we know about the technology has very little to do with it. It's the learning experience that's the important part. I'd have not problem with saying to a student, "If you don't know how to do this, find a classmate to show you." It's an authentic way of "lifelong learning." -- David W

Dean (QE) • 2009-11-10 08:54:30
yes, I agree that our younger teachers are closer to the ability level of our students

I think that we have to stop thinking about it in terms of ability level -- something to measure. It's about the experience of learning within a networked, digital, and abundant information environment. It doesn't matter whether you are using Twitter, blogs, wikis, or PaintShop Pro. It's about learning on today's information landscape. -- David W

JackMiner (CA) • 2009-11-10 08:55:29
I agree with Dean however, our access to technology is limited

Won't aways be -- and it's probably coming a lot faster than you think. It's what I like about you your district is doing -- bringing in the network, and allowing students to bring in the devices. I think that more of them are going to be access networked, digital, and abundant information in your classrooms than you think.
I also think that you shouldn't try to over control it. I'm not talking about network filtering. What I'm talking about is what they are actually doing at their desks with their iPHones or Netbooks. If some want to take notes, fine. If some want to constantly look stuff up and fact-check great. If some want to backchannel, then go with it. But I think we need to pay attention. We can learn from their experimentation with connectivity in the classroom. -- David W''

parkview (on) • 2009-11-10 08:55:45
I agree. Now, how do we get "tech phobic" teachers onside?

You have to ask, "What do we want teachers to be doing and how will we assure that it's happening -- no excuses?" I think that it would be an interesting ideas for teachers to start maintaining a portfolio -- and that this might be something that accompanies applications for employment, proposals for grants, proposals for conference presentations, etc. On the local level, require all of your teachers to maintain a digital portfolio that would be available to the administration, to each other, and to the community. -- David W

JackMiner (CA) • 2009-11-10 08:55:29
I agree with Dean however, our access to technology is limited

I'll repeat here that much of what I talked about happens in the conversations that we have in the classroom and on how teachers use the technology in front of their students. If they are just using it to present, then they're only teaching what's on the screen. But if they are using it to expose what's true, to employ (work) the information, and to express ideas compellingly, then they are teaching literacy as well. This is not to say that your students' do not need information devices. I'm saying we don't have to wait. -- David W

Norman (CA) • 2009-11-10 08:59:01
We can't assume that all younger teachers computer or technological literate.

In addition, we can't assume that those who are tech savvy will automatically know how to use it instructionally. It's actually not an intuitive leap. -- David W

yes, you are correct however they have a better likelihood that more established staff.

You know -- what I'm finding, is that many teachers who are my age are doing pretty well with this stuff. Like anything, the first time is going to take a while. But as you and your students become more comfortable -- then it becomes a lot quicker. Also, I think that a lot of this doesn't need to be happening in the classroom. The classroom is where you discuss it -- talk about it. But they do it someplace else. This is a fairly large idea, but I think it's where we need to go, another kind of learning environment where the students go to work the knowledge. Library may be a big part of this -- rethinking the library as much more than a place to go find information. The library should become a Kinkos for kids, a place where you go to work the information. -- David W

This is a good one, though most students don't do it this way. They reason their way into using the computer to solve problems. They do not memorize procedures. That is a teacher approach that we need to get over.
It's one of the reasons that I do not mind when the computer flubs up on me when I'm presenting. I do not mind your watching me reason my way into a solution. I often demonstrate software that I've only used a couple of times (or just once), because I want the audience to watch me reason my way in. -- David W
