06:55 DavidJakes : this contains a great deal of research that links technology with many student performance indicators

06:56 JLWagner : the person talking is showcasing a very good way to use wikis

09:57 JLWagner : I would agree that a wiki can be a very easy stepping stone for a teacher

09:58 chriswherley : twitter doesn't make sense until you use it.

09:58 JLWagner : Good morning, David Jakes

09:58 chriswherley : I wouldn't be here in this conference, if it wasn't for twitter. All the way from Cental IL

09:59 JLWagner : @chriswherley -- same for me -- and I am in CA

09:59 anderscj : I was made aware of this session watching twitter

09:59 chriswherley : twitter is part of my morning routine, checking email, coffee, catching up on twitter

10:00 JLWagner : wondering what the weather is like in IL today??

10:00 anderscj : So far I have just been a lurker on twitter

10:00 JLWagner : LOL -- who is David Jakes

10:00 chriswherley : cloudy, rainy, and anything else possible today in IL

10:03 chriswherley : my wife is JH math teacher, she started blogging 2 days ago. About a picture a day of our daughter.

10:03 JLWagner : i agree that blogging does make better writers....but I also believe that any student writing needs to be reviewed, and feedback given

10:03 chriswherley : Had a conversation with 5th Grade teachers this morning about blogging.

10:03 chriswherley : No time. was there major concern.

10:04 kdumont : That's why you have to make it part of what you do, not another thing.

10:04 JLWagner : this was great -- thanks for dropping the link into twitter

10:04 JLWagner : Good morning, Kelly

10:04 NAECT1-1 : We're glad you all joined in

10:04 kdumont : Hi Jen

10:05 anderscj : I don't think online connectivity should ever replace but rather enhance face to face meetings.

10:06 leebaber : Where is the conference being held?

10:06 anderscj : NC I believe

10:06 mrhgaddis-1 : Concord, NC

10:06 DavidJakes : @leebaber, NC

10:07 leebaber : but will get back to it later..live is more fun

10:08 JLWagner : @NAECT1-1 thank you for making this conference so available for us

10:08 anderscj : It might not be realistic to have every teacher do research but certainly every teacher should work to become a reflective practitioner.

10:08 DavidJakes : @anderscj. Agreed

10:08 NAECT1-1 : @ Jen - this is cindyp - I've joined you on WOW

10:09 JLWagner : Hello CindyP -- sorry that I didn't equate NAECT1-1 with you :)

10:09 NAECT1-1 : incognito today :)

10:09 JLWagner : :)

10:09 craigowens : Well if blogging doesn't produce better writers...at least it makes better thinkers/learners/people

10:09 DavidJakes : http://caret.iste.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=topics

10:09 NAECT1-1 : cathye is here as well

10:09 JLWagner : Evanoff??

10:10 JLWagner : hello Cathy Evanoff -- hope the new home is just wonderful

10:10 chriswherley : how many times to kids go to the lab. are they typing from something they have already wrote.

10:10 JLWagner : Just a bit of trivia -- Sheryl Nussbaum Beach and David Warlick were the first guests on WOW2

10:11 NAECT1-1 : Too cool!

10:12 JLWagner : Grins -- I am a Network Administrator!!

10:12 NAECT1-1 : Next question - how do we get the support of network administrators, building admin, and central office? Especially for PLN

10:12 NAECT1-1 : @Jen what convinces you then... :)

10:12 DavidJakes : This is also outstanding

10:12 DavidJakes : http://www.projectnml.org/files/working/ NMLWhitePaper.pdf

10:13 JLWagner : You have to have an educator on your team

10:13 JLWagner : the Network Admin has to have a heart for educatioin

10:13 JLWagner : MUST

10:13 DavidJakes : Study via Henry Jenkins,

10:13 JLWagner : teachers need to appreciate that we are doing our best to protect the "network" (meaning, keep it working)

10:14 leebaber-1 : Thanks David

10:14 JLWagner : is this Karl Fisch??

10:14 craigowens : Don't forget the importance of obtaining the support of our school boards. Critical.

10:14 DavidJakes : no

10:15 JLWagner : hmmmm

10:15 leebaber-1 : off air

10:15 JLWagner : they will be back

10:15 craigowens : need to refresh?

10:15 DavidJakes : I lost them too

10:15 craigowens : apparently not

10:15 JLWagner : there we go

10:15 anderscj : What I was going to say was, I set up our administrators with bloglines accounts and showed them how to use it.

10:15 mrhgaddis-1 : need to refresh

10:15 NAECT1-1 : hang on coming back

10:15 mmtech : This happened before - they do come back on line - wireless issues

10:16 JLWagner : wowow -- seems like only seconds were lost -- but a whole new discussion??

10:16 JLWagner : thanks for sharing this -- I need to head to work!! Will check for more ustreams when I get there!!!

10:16 DavidJakes : Do you have 15 minutes a day to devote to your personal learning?

10:17 leebaber : yes

10:17 NAECT1-1 : network admin pulling in something like pageflakes to open up?

10:17 mrhgaddis-1 : i think that is absolutely necessary

10:17 DavidJakes : Do all teachers have that time in their day?

10:17 chriswherley : being a tech coord, i think the dialogue has to be open between teachers, admin, tech support.

10:17 NAECT1-1 : thanks Jen

10:17 chriswherley : librarians

10:17 mrhgaddis-1 : it is all about priorities

10:17 NAECT1-1 : we'll archive the chat

10:17 DavidJakes : if so, they should read a blog, look at a del.icio.us acct, etc.

10:17 leebaber : btw..is Sheryl in this portion of the presentation?

10:17 mrhgaddis-1 : yes

10:17 mrhgaddis-1 : she is in the back

10:18 leebaber : i think teachers can make the time for 15 minutes

10:18 willrich45 : hey everyone

10:18 chriswherley : i read in a ning the other day about a teacher who was concerned about twitter being blocked and was looking for a way around it.

10:18 leebaber : if it is a priority to them

10:18 DavidJakes : Leadertalk.org

10:18 willrich45 : how much longer will this go on?

10:18 NAECT1-1 : Welcome all

10:18 chriswherley : I suggested writing up something to why they needed it and giving to principal and/or network admin

10:18 DavidJakes : when we did this in St. Louis, it was several hours long

10:18 NAECT1-1 : until 11

10:18 willrich45 : k

10:18 NAECT1-1 : ...eastern

10:18 DavidJakes : for admins, leadertalk.org

10:19 mgoshko : hello all

10:19 anderscj : I think teachers could gain a lot from reading leadertalk.

10:19 craigowens : Eduwonk.com

10:20 DavidJakes : @anderscj. I agree as well, critical that we help develop teacher leadership

10:21 DavidJakes : some blog also named 21st Century Collaborative

10:21 anderscj : RSS feeds for teachers: http://carlanderson.blogspot.com/ 2007/12/rss-feeds-for-teachers.html

10:21 willrich45 : ;0)

10:22 leebaber : hey will!

10:22 willrich45 : Hi Lee

10:24 willrich45 : There ya go

10:24 anderscj : Remove barriers, make it convienient, use it to solve a problem they have.

10:24 willrich45 : Trust your teachers

10:24 willrich45 : Networks RULE

10:24 leebaber : TooTrue

10:24 mrhgaddis-1 : my skype/twitter is mrhgaddis

10:24 willrich45 : lost feed

10:24 megswecker : my twitter is mswecker

10:25 fsinfo : keeps buffering

10:25 willrich45 : syas off air

10:25 fsinfo : coming in an out

10:25 fsinfo : refresh

10:25 willrich45 : got it

10:25 mrhgaddis-1 : blog: http://divastechnology.blogspot.com

10:25 anderscj : My guess is they have an unreliable connection. I had the same trouble with skype.

10:25 DavidJakes : wireless

10:25 willrich45 : Does this really go until 11?

10:25 mrhgaddis-1 : conference wiki: http://technologyties.pbwiki.com

10:26 mrhgaddis-1 : yes-11

10:26 chriswherley : just shows to go you that need minimal tech to make this stuff work, because this is running on wireless

10:26 NAECT1-1 : @DavidJakes SNB said hello

10:26 chriswherley : kinda running on wireless

10:26 willrich45 : Remind Sheryl about 11

10:26 willrich45 : ;0)

10:26 anderscj : Another idea: Offer clock hours toward license renewal for engaging in PLN

10:26 DavidJakes : @NAECT. Say hi back if you would, thanks!

10:26 NAECT1-1 : @willrick45 SNB says hello to Brighton

10:27 willrich45 : Brighton was great...but remind her about 11

10:27 mrhgaddis-1 : @willrich45 SNB said you handle it she is busy...haha

10:27 willrich45 : uh boy

10:27 willrich45 : serious?

10:27 NAECT1-1 : @willrich SNB will be there right @ 11

10:27 willrich45 : k

10:28 chriswherley : it is a hard dynamic to but yourself out there. Easier to be behind the scenes and doing my job in my office or network closets.

10:29 chriswherley : that being said PLN of twitter, Ustream conf, blogs etc, have given me new excitement of tech in education

10:29 NAECT1-1 : hang on connection will be back in a minute

10:29 NAECT1-1 : @chris - so true

10:30 anderscj : One downside to PLNs is they are addictive. There is real power there. It is hard to resist.

10:30 anderscj : Wait, that is also the upside

10:31 DavidJakes : thanks for the uStream, see everyone later!

10:31 NAECT1-1 : thanks David!

10:31 willrich45 : what do you mean addictive...wait...I have to watch my other Ustream channel...oh and there's a tweet link...look at that!...oops, sorry. Skype call coming!

10:32 chriswherley : @anderscj addictive, but I think it makes me overall more productive

10:32 willrich45 : ;0)

10:32 leebaber : Have to run..I will watch the recording later. Thanks for the archives.

10:32 DavidJakes : have to go do my real job

10:32 leebaber : HI to Sheryl!

10:32 chriswherley : @willrich45 too funny

10:32 NAECT1-1 : thanks lee

10:32 JLWagner : smiles - I just arrived at my Real Job!

10:32 NAECT1-1 : welcome back Jen

10:32 JLWagner : thanks -- just love the commute!!

10:33 NAECT1-1 : you're quick1

10:33 dwarlick : There is a huge lag here. When I look at the screen, I feel like I'm dancing with myself...

10:33 JLWagner : Yep -- there has to be a relationship -- a respect relationship on BOTH sides

10:33 megswecker : misstizzy, my skype is sweckersphere and my twitter is mswecker. I'd like to be involved in the ongoing chat - please include me!

10:34 anderscj : Yes, far more productive. However, I find it hard to unplug.

10:34 anderscj : I don't ever want to unplug.

10:35 JLWagner : NING -- 100% NING

10:35 JLWagner : do I recognize that voice???

10:36 craigowens : great blogging example from one of our first grade classrooms - http://misspuzosfirstgrade.blogspot.com

10:37 JLWagner : @cragiowens -- thank you for posting that link -- just delicioused it

10:38 JLWagner : hmmmm is it over??

10:39 megswecker : Yeah...next question

10:39 chriswherley : i thought someone said 11. Technical difficulties?

10:39 JLWagner : looks like it -- and he's back

10:39 megswecker : the discussion ends at 11

10:39 NAECT1-1 : hang on we keep fading

10:39 JLWagner : doesn't David Warlick just have the most welcoming face??

10:39 NAECT1-1 : :)

10:41 NAECT1-1 : Link to NC Ed Tech Skype Chat we're starting http:// www.skype.com/go/joinpublicchat?skypename=misstizzy67&topic=NC%20Ed%20Tech %20Chat&blob=FvHWQao1PYh-vjP_jaLeZcrkmpjmT8lHiGDfBhqjbQSJ- F5bx4v8J212My0BUk2dvlM

10:41 JLWagner : I inspurt daily :)

10:42 JLWagner : with a gentle encouraging PUSH forward :)

10:42 anderscj : My computer just crashed and I lost my connection here for a while. When this is all over could someone publish a transcript of this chat?

10:43 craigowens : prof development on differentiated instruction and greater access to tools (tech and other) to facilitate grouping

10:43 NAECT1-1 : we're archiving the chat and the session on this channel as well as @ conference site - technologyties.pbwiki.com

10:43 JLWagner : my teachers do mighty things when they feel a strong safety net beneath them -- we have a NEVER FAIL __ ALWAYS LEARNING attitude

10:44 JLWagner : and I am continually nudging them out of their comfort zone

10:44 craigowens : right you are JLWagner - create an environment where its OK to fail

10:44 JLWagner : they see me fail ALL the time

10:45 JLWagner : well....lol... a lot of the time

10:45 anderscj : co-learner

10:45 anderscj : lead-learner

10:45 JLWagner : failing forward

10:46 willrich45 : Missed her response...but that is an important issue...how do we stop preaching to the choir.

10:46 willrich45 : ?

10:46 chriswherley : @jlwagner what is your job title? responsibilities?

10:46 JLWagner : we go to sessions of people we don't know

10:46 JLWagner : and meet new voices

10:46 JLWagner : and read new blogs

10:46 willrich45 : connection keeps dropping

10:46 anderscj : PBL, constructivism, pedagogical change

10:46 JLWagner : @chriswherley -- I am IT/HelpDesk

10:47 JLWagner : @willrich45 -- we make an effort to hear new voices

10:47 chriswherley : ultimately it comes down to time and access.

10:47 chriswherley : as with all things, not just tech.

10:47 JLWagner : and keep expanding our PLN as much as we can

10:48 anderscj : uncover it

10:48 JLWagner : and LOL, not travel in packs, at conferences....but spread out for many opporutunities of learning

10:48 NAECT1-1 : @Jen safety in numbers :)

10:49 JLWagner : and I know -- that my comfort level is to NOT doing anything that I suggested :) but I am trying

10:49 chriswherley : sometimes the rooms are too big at conferences. people can hide around the room. they are doing a great job working the room

10:49 JLWagner : very very good session

10:50 NAECT1-1 : you go to a conference and get fed, we rarely have sessions like this where you actually get to think and participate

10:50 NAECT1-1 : @ Jen - thanks

10:50 NAECT1-1 : I'll pass that along

10:51 anderscj : I think they are modeling how we should conduct dialogue in our classrooms.

10:51 JLWagner : panel discussions -- open panel discussions -- are becoming more and more popular

10:51 NAECT1-1 : they are so needed

10:52 JLWagner : iJohn, DavidJakes, and I are hosting one at WETMA in WI in 3 weeks.....hope to ustream it

10:52 craigowens : I agree with that

10:52 NAECT1-1 : let us know the link

10:52 chriswherley : good question

10:52 JLWagner : YES!!!!!!! What are the college students learning!!!

10:52 craigowens : We have gotten some very poorly trained new teachers

10:53 JLWagner : I have many teachers taking tech classes to finish their credentialling or extended learning -- and they are learning NOTHING

10:53 anderscj : I heard an idea on Moving at the Speed of Creativity Podcast that I thought was great. WF says admin should say, "Try this, if it fails I will take the blame, if it works all the success can be attributed to you."

10:53 JLWagner : there is no instruction -- just expectation -- and it makes them frustrated

10:53 craigowens : I've taken some graduate classes recently - all of them terrible. Extent of technology integration was "create a 10-slide PowerPoint" YIKES!

10:53 JLWagner : they are making projects to get a grade -- and then it is "poof" gone

10:54 JLWagner : there has to be ownership of usage -- or it is useless

10:54 megswecker : @craigowens I've seen those kinds of assignments in Master's Degree programs for Instructional Technology. Frightening.

10:55 JLWagner : I am going back to get my Master's in Educational Technology and am already cringing at what they might want me to do :)

10:55 megswecker : What state do you live in? The NC system looks like they have great offerings!

10:56 NAECT1-1 : @willrich SNB will arrive exactly @ 11

10:56 JLWagner : We need a list of colleges that ARE teaching technology applicable skills

10:56 craigowens : They're doing the same thing at all of the local colleges around here - professors/programs are totally out of touch with the messages we are talking about here

10:57 megswecker : I know that Roanoke College and William and Mary are - VA Tech, not so much.

10:57 kdumont : For places that should be out leading our new teachers they seem to be woefully behind all of the time.

10:58 JLWagner : thank you very much for a great session

10:58 JLWagner : will there be more today??

10:59 loonyhiker : clap clap

10:59 craigowens : We (as school districts or colleges) should probably be doing more to create open dialogs that encourage the development of more meaningful programs

10:59 chriswherley : as it go into Computer Club next weeks with teachers. I have been trying not to do "how to" but more technology "show and tell". Any quick suggestions?

10:59 anderscj : Thank you for Ustreaming it!

10:59 JLWagner : any more sessions TODAY??

10:59 chriswherley : Thanks.

10:59 loonyhiker : @craig i think they are afraid of open dialogues

10:59 chriswherley : thanks

10:59 JLWagner : come say Hello David and SNB

10:59 chriswherley : did somebody just say I feel dumber than we I came in

10:59 craigowens : lol loony

10:59 loonyhiker : @chris show them voicethread

11:00 chriswherley : @loonyhiker Thanks. I will.

11:00 JLWagner : enjoying the view LOL --

11:00 anderscj : yes, "Dumber than a doorknob"

11:00 loonyhiker : lol do u feel "connected"?

11:00 JLWagner : actually I do

11:00 JLWagner : :)

11:00 loonyhiker : goal accomplished lol

11:00 craigowens : chriswherley - I've had a lot of success with voicethread too. Also maybe the Google Docs or Zoho tools. very handy skills for kids

11:00 JLWagner : in many ways

11:00 chriswherley : @jlwagner looks like a "what is it" from Games magazine

11:00 JLWagner : I know

11:01 JLWagner : I took a screen shot

11:01 loonyhiker : wonder if you could ustream me some lunch. i'm hungry

11:01 craigowens : Or maybe something with video. like ustream or Eyespot

11:01 JLWagner : what is next??

11:01 JLWagner : besides work :)

11:01 JLWagner : I truly enjoy Friday morning Ustream opportunities

11:01 JLWagner : where is Cathy Evanoff??

11:01 JLWagner : I hear David

11:01 craigowens : maybe somebody should tell them the mic is on

11:02 JLWagner : nah -- this is fun

11:02 craigowens : lol

11:02 loonyhiker : hi jody smith! :)

11:02 anderscj : Let me use the network here: I just finished a project I would like feedback on: http://carlanderson.blogspot.com/2008/03/digital- backpack-killer-online-apps-and.html

11:02 JLWagner : hello Jody Smith

11:02 JLWagner : uhoh

11:02 NAECT1-1 : What an awesome conversation

11:02 loonyhiker : uh oh it got quiet

11:02 loonyhiker : they heard nme

11:02 JLWagner : have a great day everyone

11:02 loonyhiker : me

11:02 JLWagner : check back with you later for the final session???

11:03 craigowens : anderscj - that's cool! nicely done
